What is SMO 254?

INTRODUCTION
SMO 254 stainless steel is a high quality austenitic stainless steel. It is manufactured with twice the strength of 300 series stainless steel and a combination of impact toughness, resistance to chloride stress corrosion, cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion. SMO 254 buttweld fittings are a cost effective replacement for high nickel and titanium alloys in certain applications. It is also recognised for its exceptional machinability. SMO 254 is a lower cost alternative. These tubes are available in a wide range of sizes, standards, thicknesses and requirements. They are designed for use in seawater and other chloride media applications. The grade offers excellent anti-biofouling properties, which are particularly noticeable in seawater. They are extremely resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion as well as normal corrosion. They are stress corrosion crack resistant to impact loading. SMO grades have high strength. They are weldable and can be welded with any filler material, even at low temperatures. SMO tubes are also machinable and formable, so they can be easily formed into any complex shape or design.
