According to the API 5L standard, PSL1 grade steel pipes must meet stringent dimensional tolerance requirements. Outer diameter deviation is typically controlled within ±0.75% (e.g., for a steel pipe with an outer diameter of 406.4mm, the tolerance range is approximately ±3.05mm). Some high-end manufacturers can further reduce the tolerance to ±0.5% or even higher through optimized processes, ensuring seamless connection during installation and reducing the risk of welding defects. Inner diameter precision is equally crucial. High-precision inner diameters reduce fluid transport resistance and improve pipeline operating efficiency, making it particularly suitable for long-distance, large-diameter oil and gas transportation projects. The high dimensional precision of API 5L X65 PSL1 welded steel pipes stems from advanced manufacturing processes. During production, high-frequency resistance welding (HFW) or submerged arc welding (SAW) technologies are employed, combined with online diameter gauges and ultrasonic flaw detection systems to monitor the dimensions and weld quality of the welded steel pipes in real time. For example, the HFW process heats the edges of the pipe blank to a plastic state using high-frequency current before pressure forming, and with the aid of high-precision forming rollers and sizing machines, achieving an outer diameter fluctuation of less than 0.3 mm. The SAW process, on the other hand, further enhances dimensional stability through multi-wire submerged arc welding and mechanical diameter expansion technology. Furthermore, heat treatment (such as normalizing or tempering) eliminates residual welding stress, preventing dimensional deformation caused by stress release. High-precision inner and outer diameters not only improve the installation efficiency of the welded steel pipes but also significantly enhance their mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. API 5L X65 steel grade requires a yield strength ≥450 MPa and a tensile strength ≥535 MPa, and must pass a -20℃ low-temperature impact test to ensure toughness even in extreme environments. Precise dimensional control reduces the gap between the welded steel pipe and the anti-corrosion coating, lowers the cathodic protection current requirement, and extends the pipeline’s service life. Meanwhile, high-precision welded steel pipes are easier to automate, improving construction efficiency and reducing labor costs.
