Introduction

Alloy steel is steel blended with alloying elements to enhance mechanical strength, creep resistance, high-temperature stability and pressure bearing capacity. Alloy steel pipe refers to tubular products made of alloy steel. Most high-temperature and pressure critical projects adopt alloy steel seamless pipe without welding seams, avoiding hidden dangers such as weld weakness under harsh working conditions.

ASTM A335 Seamless Alloy Steel Pipe: This specification defines high-temperature service pipe sized by NPS nominal pipe size with fixed standard outer diameters. It covers a wide OD range from 1/2" to 26". Dimensional tolerances are based on percentage of outer diameter, and wall thickness can be ordered to either minimum wall or nominal wall requirements. Tolerance is moderate, designed for field welding, flanging and bending in high-pressure process piping.

ASTM A213 Seamless Alloy Steel Boiler & Heat Exchanger Tube: A213 tubing is specified by actual outer diameter rather than NPS. Most production covers OD up to 5 inches. It adopts tighter OD tolerance limits than A335 to guarantee reliable tube sheet expansion for heat exchanger bundles. Cold-drawn A213 tubing normally carries ±10% wall thickness tolerance, suitable for boilers, superheaters and heat transfer equipment.

ASTM A519 Seamless Mechanical Alloy Steel Tubing: A519 mechanical tubing is marked with true outer diameter and available in round, square and rectangular shapes. It is separated into hot-finished and cold-finished grades. Cold-finished A519 provides the strictest dimensional accuracy among the three standards. The tight tolerance allows subsequent machining, turning and honing for hydraulic cylinders, bushings and general mechanical components.

Key Summary for Buyer Selection:Large diameter high-temperature process pipeline → ASTM A335Boiler tubes, heat exchanger bundle tubes requiring expansion connection → ASTM A213Tubing for mechanical cutting, machining and structural parts → ASTM A519

Properties

The tables list chemical composition and mechanical property requirements for ASTM A335, ASTM A213 and ASTM A519 alloy steel seamless products.

ASTM A335 adopts P-series ferritic alloy grades for high-temperature pressure piping. Corresponding T-series grades under.

ASTM A213 share identical chemical composition but follow adjusted mechanical test rules for boiler and heat exchanger tubes. Even with matching material chemistry, A335 pipe and A213 tube cannot be freely interchanged for pressure equipment.

ASTM A519 mechanical tubing covers carbon & alloy grades optimised for machining and structural use, with property specifications not designed for high-temperature pressure service.

FAQ

Q1: What are chrome moly alloy steel seamless pipes?

A1: Chrome moly pipe refers to high-temperature alloy seamless steel pipe. Chromium provides oxidation and corrosion resistance, while molybdenum improves creep strength, avoids high-temperature softening and reduces embrittlement. These seamless alloy pipes are designed for rigorous high-temperature and high-pressure industrial working conditions.

Q2: What are the main ASTM standards for high-temperature alloy seamless tubing?

A2: ASTM/ASME SA335: High-temperature seamless alloy steel pipe (P grades: P5, P9, P11, P22, P91, P92) for process pipingASTM/ASME SA213: Boiler & heat exchanger seamless alloy tube (T grades: T11, T22, T91, T92)ASTM A209: Carbonmoly boiler & superheater tubes (T1, T1a, T1b)ASTM A519: Mechanical alloy tubing for machining, not for pressure piping

Q3: What is the key difference between ASTM A213 and ASTM A335?

A3: Many matching T-series (A213) and P-series (A335) grades share identical chemical composition but cannot be freely interchanged. ASTM A213 applies to small-medium diameter tubes for boiler bundles, superheaters and heat exchangers with tight tolerances for tube sheet expansion. ASTM A335 is alloy steel pipe defined by NPS nominal size, commonly larger diameter for main steam pipelines and petrochemical high-pressure process piping.

Q4: What are typical applications for SA335 and SA213 chrome moly products?

A4: SA335 P11/P22/P91 are widely used in power plants for main steam piping, boiler headers; P5/P9 serve refinery high-temperature pipelines. SA213 alloy tubes are mainly used for boiler superheater, reheater and heat exchanger bundles in power, petrochemical and thermal equipment projects.

Q5: What is the maximum service temperature of mainstream Cr-Mo grades?

A5: P11 / T11: up to 538°C P22 / T22: up to 565~580°C P91 / T91: up to 593°C P92 / T92: up to 620°C

Q6: Can chrome moly alloy steel pipes be welded?

A6: Yes. A335 and A213 alloy pipes support bending, flanging and fusion welding. Preheating and mandatory post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) are required to prevent welding zone cracking and restore mechanical performance.

Q7: What test documents and certificates can you provide?

A7: EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates with full heat number traceability covering chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment and NDT records. EN 10204 3.2 third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) is available on request.

Q8: What size range do you supply? What is your delivery lead time?

A8: Size range: OD 6–720 mm, wall thickness 0.5–120 mm, standard length 3–16 m. Custom dimensions are acceptable. Common stock grades (P11, P22) ship within 2–3 weeks; customized P91 and special sizes require 4–6 weeks. Rush orders can be arranged with extra cost.

Painting & Coating of Alloy Seamless Steel Pipe: Oiled or Black painted to prevent rust

alloy-steel-pipe-manufacturing-process
