LSAW Steel Pipe Buying Guide: 8 Mistakes International Buyers Should Avoid

Buying large-diameter LSAW steel pipe for an international project involves more than comparing supplier quotations. A steel pipe can meet the required dimensions and still create project risk if the material specification, inspection scope, documentation, coating or delivery plan is not properly defined. For EPC contractors, project owners, distributors and engineering companies, a better approach is to compare suppliers against the same technical and commercial requirements. Here are eight common purchasing mistakes international buyers should avoid.

1. Comparing Price Before Finalizing the Specification

Asking for the “best price” before defining the technical scope can produce misleading quotations. A meaningful LSAW RFQ should identify the applicable standard, steel grade, OD, wall thickness, length, end preparation, quantity, inspection requirements and delivery conditions. The first step should therefore be to standardize the specification before comparing prices.

2. Treating All LSAW Steel Pipes as the Same

LSAW describes a manufacturing process, not a complete product specification. Two LSAW steel pipes can have different grades, standards, wall thicknesses, testing requirements, delivery conditions and intended applications. For line pipe projects, API Specification 5L covers requirements for seamless and welded steel pipe, including manufacturing, inspection, testing, marking and traceability. Its 47th edition was published in 2026 with updates across more than 15 technical areas. Compare the complete technical scope—not simply the words “LSAW steel pipe.”

3. Leaving PSL Requirements Unclear

For API 5L projects, buyers should clearly specify whether PSL1 or PSL2 is required. The product specification level can affect chemical requirements, testing, documentation and other quality controls. API identifies PSL 1 and PSL 2 as distinct product specification levels within API 5L. If the purchase specification does not clearly define the required PSL, clarify it before production begins. A supplier quotation should not be evaluated against an undefined quality level.

4. Checking Only the MTC

The Material Test Certificate (MTC) is an important part of the quality package, but it may not be the only document required for a project. Depending on the purchase specification, the inspection dossier may also include:
  • NDT reports
  • Hydrostatic test records
  • Dimensional inspection records
  • Heat treatment records, where applicable
  • Coating inspection records
  • Weld inspection documentation
  • Third-party inspection reports
  • Traceability records
API 5L specifically includes inspection, testing, marking and traceability requirements, making documentation part of the product verification process rather than an afterthought.

5. Overlooking the Longitudinal Weld and Pipe Ends

LSAW pipe is produced with a longitudinal submerged arc weld, so welding quality and inspection requirements should be clearly defined for applicable projects. Buyers should also confirm pipe-end requirements before production:
  • Plain or bevelled ends
  • Bevel configuration
  • End squareness
  • End protection
  • Field-welding requirements
Changing end preparation after manufacturing can add handling, machining and schedule costs. For projects involving field welding, the pipe-end specification should be aligned with the approved welding and construction requirements from the beginning.

6. Leaving Coating Until the Last Minute

If the pipeline requires external corrosion protection, coating should be included in the procurement plan from the start. The RFQ should define, where applicable:
  • Coating system
  • Surface preparation
  • Coating thickness
  • Inspection requirements
  • Holiday testing
  • Repair procedure
  • Handling requirements
Coating can affect production sequencing, inspection, packing and transportation. Treating it as a separate issue after pipe production can create unnecessary schedule risk.

7. Comparing Ex-Works Price Instead of Total Landed Cost

The lowest factory quotation is not necessarily the lowest project cost. For international procurement, buyers should consider: Pipe + coating + inspection + inland transport + port handling + ocean freight + documentation + customs-related costs + delivery risk. A supplier with a slightly higher pipe price may provide better overall value if technical clarification, inspection coordination, documentation and logistics are managed more efficiently. For large projects, the right comparison is therefore total landed cost against the same technical scope.

8. Ignoring Supply Reliability and Project Schedule

Large LSAW orders are often project-driven. Delivery performance can therefore be just as important as the initial quotation. Before placing an order, buyers should understand:
  • Production capacity
  • Manufacturing schedule
  • Raw material availability
  • Inspection arrangements
  • Coating capacity, if applicable
  • Packing and loading plan
  • Export documentation
  • Shipping coordination
  • Expected delivery milestones
For distributors or maintenance contractors, regional stock can be useful for standard sizes with recurring demand. However, project-specific LSAW pipe should be evaluated primarily against the approved specification and production schedule rather than assuming that stock availability will solve every requirement.

What Should an International LSAW RFQ Include?

A professional RFQ should normally provide:

The governing code and project specification should therefore be identified before the technical scope is finalized. Price Is Important—But It Should Not Come First. For international LSAW steel pipe procurement, the most useful question is not: “Who offers the lowest price?” It is: “Who can supply the specified pipe, meet the required inspection and documentation requirements, and deliver it on schedule at the lowest reliable total cost?” A complete RFQ creates a fair basis for supplier comparison. It also reduces the risk of specification changes, inspection delays, documentation gaps and unexpected logistics costs after the purchase order has been placed. For project buyers, the goal is not simply to purchase LSAW steel pipe at a low unit price. It is to secure the right specification, verified quality, complete documentation and reliable delivery as one coordinated supply package.
